Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10
Observation: Paul focuses on the magnitude of God’s grace and mercy, showing us that our salvation is a free gift. He tells us that when we put our faith in Jesus, we are completely transformed.
Application: When I was younger, I wanted to be an artist. I bought sketch books, tried to make people in my family sit still for portraits I created, and took art lessons. Unfortunately, like most of my other childhood dreams, that aspiration was quickly shattered when I realized I’m not very artistic. I had to add “artist” to the list of other jobs I would never have, a list that also included “gymnast” and “ice skater.” (Shoutout to Tara Lipinski, my childhood hero. Nagano 1998 = best Olympics ever.)
During my brief stint as an artist, I did develop one watercolor masterpiece. To be honest, my teacher helped with most of it, but it happened to be in my sketchbook and during my art lesson, so I’m just going to go ahead and take the credit. I (read: we) painted a field with a path leading to an old barn. At age nine, I thought every detail was perfect – the uneven path, the wheat in the field, the rusty red color of the barn, the blotchy blue clouds at the top. I was so proud of it, every last detail. It was my masterpiece.
God created a masterpiece, too. That masterpiece is us.
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
We are God’s masterpiece, transformed by our faith in Christ Jesus. As the artist, he created every part of us with painstaking perfection, etching out every detail and making it just right. We are perfectly poised to do good works, not because they lead to salvation but because they happen as a result of our salvation.
If you feel overwhelmed by your imperfections and inadequacies, remember that you’re a masterpiece. Remember that God developed a plan for our lives long before we did – and his plan is good, perfect, and pure. Rest in that hope today.
Prayer: God, thank you for making me your masterpiece. I praise you for creating me, preparing me in advance to carry out everything you’ve designed me to do. I pray you’ll let nothing hold me back from embracing what you’ve designed me to do and to be. Amen.
