Scripture: Mark 9:1-28
Observation: The disciples witness the transfiguration of Jesus (a glimpse of what was to come in his resurrection), he discusses the prophet Elijah, and he heals a demon-possessed boy.
Application: Do you remember that childhood story about the little engine that could? If it’s been awhile since you read it, here’s a refresher: there’s a long train that must be pulled over a mountain. When larger engines refuse to take the job, a smaller engine is asked to give it a shot. Although the small engine isn’t well-equipped, it successfully gets the train over the mountain by repeating one small phrase, “I think I can, I think I can.”
In tougher moments of life, many of us whisper to ourselves “I think I can, I think I can.” But what if we took a look at this section in the Gospel of Mark and decided to flip the script? What if we said, “Through Jesus, I know I can, I know I can”?
Through Jesus, I know I can.
Look at the story of the demon-possessed boy. First of all, let’s just take a moment and recognize that this stuff we’re reading about is straight up crazy. Demons have taken over this boy to the point that he has serious convulsions and foams at the mouth. His father, desperate for some reprieve for his son, looks everywhere to try and get him help.
In verse 22, after the disciples have failed to heal his son, the father of the demon-possessed boy asks Jesus to have mercy and help them “if he can.” And then comes Jesus’ reply in verse 23 --
“What do you mean ‘If I can’? Anything is possible if a person believes.”
Through Jesus, I know I can – overcome anything. Not just the things that seem to make sense. Not just the things in my own control. Not just the things I’ve had experience with before. Anything.
What do you need to believe God for today? What area of your life requires you to increase your faith? What part of your life is ready for you to pray an “anything” prayer, a big, bold, audacious prayer that shows Jesus just how much you trust in him?
Let’s pray “anything” prayers today. (And if you have an “anything” prayer that you’re willing to share, comment below – I’ll pray for every single request that you share. I believe God for anything, and I’m praying you will, too.)
Prayer: Jesus, we praise you for being able to answer our “anything” prayers. We pray you’ll fill us with belief, with a renewed sense of hope and security that comes from you and you alone. Amen.
