Scripture: Mark 6:30-56
Observation: Jesus performs two big miracles – he feeds 5,000 people from only five loaves of bread and two fish and then walks on water to save his disciples from a storm.
Application: How do you feel about leftovers? Growing up, I was pretty picky and never a fan of leftovers. However, as soon as I started buying my own food and paying my own bills, leftovers started looking (and tasting) a lot more appealing. When Andy and I first got married and had very little money, we were all about leftovers after family events. I think we brought Ziploc bags and containers to every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter meal during our first year of marriage just so we could snag a few days worth of free food. #noshame
Those leftovers felt like a small miracle; we were able to eat well all week long AND for free. Double win!
When I read the story of Jesus feeding five thousand people, I love the miracle in and of itself, but more than anything, I love this simple line:
“They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward, the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftover bread and fish.”
Jesus took five loaves of bread and two fish and fed 5,000 people. But more than that, he made sure there was enough leftover that people could take a doggy bag home too. With this small act, he made it clear: I’m not a “just enough to get by” God, I’m a “more than enough” God.
How incredible does it feel to serve a God doesn’t just want us to “get by” but wants us to thrive? He encourages us to believe for more, hope for more, trust for more. What do you need to believe God for today? Do you pray that he’ll provide just enough for you to get by? Or do you believe that you serve a God of abundance, a God who overflows with love and provision and mercy?
Ask him for what you need today. Don’t be afraid to bring the empty parts of yourself, the empty Ziploc bags and the empty Glad containers of your soul that need to be filled with love and grace and mercy. He’s here to fill them to the brim, to remind you that he IS Lord of all.
Prayer: God, thank you for your incredible provision that goes so far beyond the minimal amount required. Thank you for being a God of abundance and overflowing love and grace. I pray I can rely on you for more today. Amen.
