Scripture: John 20:19-23
Observation: After his resurrection, Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene and then to his disciples. He commands them to go out and continue their work. He also empowers them with the Holy Spirit.
Application: My work day almost always starts the same way: get to work, put away my lunch, make my (second…okay, sometimes third) cup of coffee, and then write out a to-do list. I love having a plan for the day and knowing what to expect. Now if only all my days would go like I wanted them to… STICK TO THE PLAN, PEOPLE.
(All my other Type A people out there, are you with me?!)
When Jesus appears to his disciples, they were locked in a room, hiding from Jewish leaders that were persecuting them, and they had one plan for the day: stay alive. That’s it. You know what wasn’t in their plan? Jesus – their leader and Lord that they had watched die on the cross a few days earlier – showing up alive… and yet here he was.
“Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them!” (v. 19)
The disciples were shocked – until they realized: this was the plan all along. Jesus wasn’t supposed to live among them forever; he was here to die for the sins of this world, to rise again, and appear to his disciples before sending his Holy Spirit to live and dwell among them – forever.
As Jesus talks with the disciples, he lets them in on another part of the plan:
“Again he said, ‘Peace be with you As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” (v. 21)
Just as God chose Jesus to save the world from sin through his life, death, and resurrection, God has chosen us too – we are sons and daughters of the Lord Most High, called to spread his message to the world.
That’s the plan. It’s more than a box to check; it’s an everyday mission, an eternal commissioning.
God has sent you for a reason. Who is he asking you to reach out to, to show grace and mercy towards, to share the life-giving message of Jesus with?
Prayer: God, thank you for the miracle of resurrection – Jesus rising from the dead with power over everything that has had power over us! I praise you for that. I pray I will live with purpose, ready to do whatever you have sent me to do. Amen.
