Happy September! Where are my fellow fall fans? I know you’re out there, and it’s time to unite. Let’s all be cliché together and bond over our shared love for everything fall-like. Football, chilly mornings, scarves, chunky sweaters, boots, running without having a heat stroke, pumpkin-everything? Yes, please! Move over Christmas, because fall is the most wonderful time of the year.
I AM SO PUMPED. (In case you couldn’t tell.)
And as if fall couldn’t get any better, my son Luka was born last September, so now we have another reason to celebrate. He’ll be one this month! Someone hold me.
Now that we’ve all bonded over a shared love for fall and cute babies, let’s talk about our next SOAP study: Walking His Will.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve asked yourself this question on a daily basis: “What am I supposed to do?” How am I supposed to respond to this person? Act in this relationship? Pray in this situation? Know what to do with my money? Get rid of worry and anxiety? Remain faithful in a seemingly hopeless situation? What is God’s will for my life?
Too often, I try to answer those questions on my own, relying on my own (limited) wisdom and experience, asking others for their insights and opinions… instead of looking to the One who really has all the answers.
Enter: Jesus and the “Sermon on the Mount.” We find it in Matthew, one of the gospels of Jesus’ life, in chapters 5 through 7. This is the longest (continuous) sermon from Jesus recorded in the New Testament, and he drops some major knowledge bombs – from how to pray to how to love our enemies. He shows us how to walk in God’s will.
As we’ll soon learn, Jesus doesn’t mince words here: he’s direct, he’s honest, and if we’re really open to God during this study, we might just find ourselves experiencing a swift punch to the gut as we read some of what he says. (Just a fair warning.) But for every challenging word, we’ll also receive direction on that question we so often ask: “What am I supposed to do?” We’ll learn how we can love and be a light and serve the One who gave everything for us.
We’ll start our study on Monday, September 18th. If you’re new to SOAP, learn more here… and invite someone to join you! You can receive each morning’s devotional delivered straight to your inbox.
