Scripture: Proverbs 23 (focus on v. 23)
Observation: We should seek truth, along with wisdom, discipline, and good judgement, and when we have it, we should hold on to it.
Application: What’s something that you spent a long time searching for? This past Christmas, I spent forever searching for a Nike Apple Watch Series 2+ for my husband. I’d find one online, look at the price, decide it wasn’t worth it, and figure I’d find another one later.
Well, all of the sudden, it was December 15th – “later” was here, and all I’d bought him was a pair of socks. I knew I was in trouble, so I started to furiously scour the internet, trying to figure out how to get my hands on this Apple watch AND get it here in time for Christmas. (Thanks to BLINQ and some very overpriced “rush” shipping, all was right on Christmas morning.)
Once I clicked “buy,” I watched that thing process like a hawk, stalking the UPS tracking number hour by hour. And once it arrived? You better believe I held on to it; I basically met the UPS guy at the door and didn’t let go until it was wrapped and given to my husband three days later. Let’s be real – when I find something valuable, I hold on to it.
Truth is a lot like that. When we find it, we need to hold on tight – and, to be honest, sometimes finding it feels as elusive as trying to find a quality version of last year’s popular Apple watch.
“So get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgement.” (v. 23)
Truth is valuable, a treasure worth holding onto; we simply need to learn how to find it. Here are three simple ways I seek out truth:
- Word of God: As Paul says in 2 Timothy 3, all scripture is God-inspired. We can always trust his Word to reveal what’s true and what’s not.
- Holy Spirit: The Advocate, the Helper, the Counselor – The Holy Spirit speaks truth into every situation if we’re willing to invite him in.
- Trusted friends & mentors: Paired with reading the Word and with prayer, other people that we trust as spiritual mentors can help point us towards truth.
How do you need to seek out truth today?
Prayer: God, thank you for the power of your truth, wisdom, discipline, and good judgement. I pray with faith that you’ll reveal truth to me today in every way. Amen.
