Scripture: Proverbs 24 (focus on v. 16)
Observation: If we follow God’s ways, we can always rebound and get back up from whatever life throws our way; if we’re not following God's ways, anything can destroy us.
Application: Have you ever encountered someone or something that threatened to take you down, be the end of you?
Maybe it was a break-up or divorce. Maybe it was an addiction or life-threatening illness. Maybe it was a broken relationship, a betrayal, a lie. Maybe it was a deep rejection that felt like it would never go away.
I’ve had moments like that. Last spring, I went through a particularly tough time; I had just come back from maternity leave, and in navigating my new “normal,” I felt like I was failing on every front. Marriage. Motherhood. Ministry. Fail. Fail. Fail.
It was frustrating and painful and overwhelming. But, in the midst of it all, I found hope in the only One who can provide us with true hope anyways – God. Despite what was happening around me, I had hope that God was with me and because of him, I would never ultimately fail.
“The godly may trip up seven times, but they will get back up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.” (v. 16)
And I love how the Message puts it:
“Don’t interfere with good people’s lies… no matter how many times you trip them up, God-loyal people don’t stay down long. Soon they’re up on their feet while the wicked end up flat on their faces.”
If we’re “God-loyal,” nothing can bring us down.
Nothing can destroy us or separate us from the love and power of God.
Are you living in that power today?
Prayer: God, thank you for this reminder – that I can keep tripping, keep messing up, keep feeling like I’m falling short – yet ultimately rest in the hope of your presence and your power. Let me walk in that power today. Amen.
